Roland Olsen is President for Spring-Ford Youth Basketball. Roland has been an active volunteer in the program for the past nine seasons serving as head coach for both girls travel and rec teams, serving as a travel tryout evaluator, and organized and ran the 73-team 2015 President’s Day weekend tournament (utilizing online team registration, payment, communications, scheduling and real-time result tracking/standings for the first time in tournament history). Beyond the SFYB, Roland has served as assistant coach on a number teams within the Collegeville Jaguars girls AAU basketball program. Roland has also coached numerous rec soccer teams at Westmont and the occasional fall basketball squad. Roland is certified in the Positive Coaching Alliance’s Double Goal Coaching: Coaching for Winning and Life Lessons as well as follow-on courses. He is a huge proponent of the PCA program and will look to expand the rollout of the PCA program across the SFYB coaching ranks. A native New Yorker, Roland played varsity football, soccer and baseball in high school, but it was the volleyball court that granted Roland the most opportunity where he played as a junior, in college (Northeastern University) and professionally as a member of the AVP. In 1991, playing for Asics at US Nationals in Kansas City, he was selected to the All-America Team. While he has forgotten more about volleyball than he will ever know about any other sport, he still carries a tremendous amount of experience and know-how from having trained, played and being coached at a high level – much of which is very applicable in coaching and running a youth sports program. He and his wife Kelley (she owns Roland on the tennis court) have been Collegeville residents since 2002 and are blessed with three daughters all of which have played or are currently playing in the Spring-Ford Youth Basketball program as well as the Jaguars AAU basketball club and Westmont soccer club. Roland has three primary objectives as he begins his first year as President: significantly increased level of volunteerism, expanded coach the coaches program to include rollout of the PCA online course and increased focus on skill development for the youngest players.
